Few days ago, trying to chase away the ‘fall blues’, while having my morning coffee I have noticed that finally the sun was rising above the sky, which faintly promised for a pleasant weather for the rest of the week. Taking another sip of my latte – still feeling quite uninspired- I said to myself – ‘I wish something spectacular has happened’.
When I opened my mailbox, I’ve noticed that there was something waiting for me there. It turned out that my blog had few new ‘followers’ which, of course, made me very happy. Among them there was an alert about a writer called Kim (author of a very nice online read called ‘Peace, Love and Patchouli’).

This is actually a beautiful song, so delighful in its simplicty. It was released on Eels album called “Tomorrow Morning.” They are an excellent band, slightly related to Bob Dylan because they covered him a couple of times, at least. Their best known Dylan cover was “Girl From The North Country.” I like Eels a lot and the way Mr.E (Mark Oliver Everett) let this song roll makes me smile with anticipation of a joyful time, the love for someone I have known that’s growing in my heart just like a tropical tsunami. So, here it comes, dedicated to the one I love:

The song already says it all. We all know how it feels when we have come to know someone that really means something bigger than life itself. It’s just a wonder, as the song reflects so well, knowing things are going fine, thinking everything is going to be alright and that particular someone might love you too. It makes you feel joyful and plenty of energy. You go thinking and thinking and thinking again, filled up with tenderness, looking forward to a beautiful relationship that you hope will last forever. And this all happens even when you are aware it never worked in the past with anybody else. So I must agree, I like her toothy smile, I like the way the song is rolling. I like the way this is going.
As an homage to Bob Dylan on his Nobel Prize award I’m bringing here a sample of what Dylan can do with his own stuff when he feels inspired:
That magic moment in the beginning when he takes the harmonica and blows out the audience’s minds, it’s unbelievable. Something out of this world. How he feels into the music and makes that sign to the drummer with his arm, his hand asking him to stop and wait ’til he’s done with his mouth harp solo, that’s simply amazing. It sure exemplifies the versatility of his talent, the greatness of a genius.

The news just broke up this afternoon at 13:00 hours my local time. I couldn’t believe it, even if I knew he’s been nominated for the Nobel prize year after year since 1997. But it’s true. Here, through the link provided on the newspaper name, you can read the news as published in The Guardian, including live updates and reactions. I am still leaving another link, this one to the CNBC news from Reuters agency. Many people don’t even think he deserved such a prize. Most of us, Dylan followers thought it was the Nobel Prize who didn’t deserve Dylan figure in the list of the awarded persons 😆
Anyway, these are really great news. He’s the first singer/songwriter to be awarded with such a prestigious prize. From now on they will have to consider that poetry and music (song’s lyrics) are intimately linked and have a common goal: To reach the souls, to make other people feel emotions and think deeply about their lives and the human condition.

This is one of the most popular Rhymes of the Spanish post-romanticist poet Gustavo Adolfo Becquer (1836-1870.) Yesterday I mentioned this verse in one of Candice’s posts at thefeatheredsleep blog (you can take a look at her wonderful site following the link.) As she wanted to know this Rhyme and be able to read it in Spanish, I promised her I would post it. I took the liberty to translate it myself to the English language, so the words might be understandable for everybody else, or I hope so.

Just a single thought that comes to mind: While it’s well known that several romanticists, such as Lord Byron and Edgar Allan Poe, influenced Bob Dylan, and also he came to read many of the greatest Spanish poets like Fray Luis de Leon or Federico Garcia Lorca, it sounds bizarre that I have never heard of any link (or read about) between the songwriter and G.A.Becquer.
This is the 3rd and last day of my 3 Days 3 Quotes challenge. To finish up I was going to share one of the many insightful quotes I could choose among the so frequently clever Bob Dylan lines, or answers when interviewed. In the end, I changed my mind, though, and decided to pick up something funnier of significant impact from somebody else, as I didn’t want to bother anyone with as much Dylan content as I have in mind. On the other hand, I could not make a final decision myself between the many quotations from the American bard one might consider reasonably witty. Talking with a very special friend of mine, as I mentioned I wanted to find a funny quote for the last issue of this daring challenge, she suggested me to use anyone from Groucho Marx. That was a brilliant idea, so I just agreed and started to google it, in search of the coolest one for me at the present time. Here it is:

This is day two of my 3 Days 3 Quotes challenge. I have always liked this sentence, which I read was by Bob Dylan. I believed it, though I had never seen it in any Dylan song or book. I just discovered it was actually a Bob Marley quote :D. Anyway, still it is a great one, so here it comes:

When I was a kid and I was going to school, the entrance to the building had a bow and an inscription above the arch. Every day when I walked in I was reading it, thinking about it. I didn’t really understand the meaning, but I could never forget it. Being an adult I became aware of how thoughtful the sentence was, and what an awesome truth it left written in my mind. So I wanted to bring it here for all of you to read. This is the first quote, which I learned it comes from the Holy Bible, St. John The Vangelist 8:31-36, quoting Jesus Christ words to those who believed in him:

¿No es una canción fascinante? Ni siquiera sé bien de que trata, pero es tan sugerente. Un torrente de sentimientos y emociones. Parece que algo sucede entre los dos personajes, el cantante / compositor (ya que está escrito en primera persona de nuevo) y ese alguien a quien él describe como “un adolescente un viernes en un desfile de moda congelándose en un rincón” ¡Qué sorprendente descripción! Podemos rastrear entre líneas la relación, que parece estar rota o deteriorada, pero aún así, mejor que nadie vea llorar a ninguno de los dos. Ocultando las emociones, mostrando entereza tratando de parecer normal.
Las metáforas son increíbles “como un koi en un estanque helado“, una imagen brutal. Su relación parece derrumbarse y, mientras vuelve a reproducir el pasado, “esa caña de azúcar, esa limonada”, puede prever la “tormenta eléctrica, este maremoto” destruyendo todo lo que quedaba. La firmeza en su actitud le permite hacer frente a los hechos sin temor, “esta avalancha, no me asusta”, incluso si tiene que hacer de tripas corazón para ocultar las lágrimas.
Mientras se enfrenta a la tormenta aún tiene algunas palabras que decirle a su pareja acerca de lo que sentía, lo que el ser aludido significaba para él, lo que esa otra persona podría haber hecho o evitado. Por eso me encantan esos versos del estribillo que se repiten al final:
“Esa caña de azúcar que sabía tan bien Eso es lo que eres, eso es lo que conseguiste Vamos, adelante, que nadie te vea llorar”.
En tanto que el otro no lo hizo, el intérprete canta como si pretendiese decir algo así como “mejor no llores, guarda tus lágrimas ahora” cuando dice “que nadie te vea llorar”. La noción más interesante en la estructura narrativa resulta ser la comparación entre ambos, ya que aparentemente ambos sufren igualmente. Sin duda el desenlace supone un trance igualmente doloroso para cualquiera de los miembros de la pareja, ambos deben ocultar las lágrimas.
Sea cual sea la razón, cómo fue construida la letra o el impacto de una conmovedora sucesión de acordes, el caso es que no puedo evitar sentirme emocionado por la forma en que Michael Stipe canta esta canción. Cada vez que entona el estribillo tengo que recordarme a mí mismo: “Vamos, adelante, que nadie te vea llorar”.
